Why do they call Las Vegas a Sin City? Christian can not go?

interesting question! I think due to the famous gambling city in the nation, Las Vegas has been called the sin city.

Now it is going to be an issue to debate whether gambling is sin or not. Some say it is just game for enjoyment. The other might say whatever not of God is still sin.

The bottom line I think, you don't have to go to Las Vegas to do sinful act. And at the same time, sinful act is done by people not the place.

Well, very good question.

Generally, Las Vegus is absolutely a good place in its nature; however, people have changed its nature over to some sort of violent activities that may intentionally cause people to do sin.

Most activities in this city are gambling and such, of cause, gambling itself originally violent activities which whoever involves with may be led to spend over budget and may perhaps do violence because of get into a deep debts. Also,its intention leads people into a position that subject them to do sins if they couldn't control of themselves. for instance, one may be gambling with all of one's money and broke and couldn't find more money to repay the debts; so, this situation may lead one's intention to do sins to others... such as murder, rob, etc.

In its history, people were out of limit & control of their boundaries in their responsibility... so they just intruded into others' boundaries that lead them to do sins. even now is still happened not just only Las Vegus but also other cities where settle some sort of these activities.

Besides of gambling, there are other adultery activities around town as well. those adultery activities may lead someone to the situation of violence and do sins against others, their own family members, or even God's laws.

Biblically, shoud we not participate in any path that may lead us to sinful nature? the answer is YES. To answer your question of why Christian should not be there, I would like to express some guidance as demonstrates in the book of Galatians 5:16-21 (KJV) says;

'I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfuill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit (God), and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish... Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.'

The book of Romans 13:12-14 (KJV) says;

'The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.'

Like Lot and his family have got an order from the Lord to escape for their lives out of Sodom and Gomorrah (sin cities in the sight of the Lord) and they didn't allow to look back to the city when they were escaping... the tragedy happened when his wife did disobedient to the order, so she became a pillar of salt. more details in the book of Genesis 19:12-29 --KJV

Hope this help clearing your understanding of why Christian should not be participating in this kind of activities or locate themselves in an significant risky area like Vegus. However, people have their own will to make a choice--that what God created humen to be. but those who make wrong decision or disobey God's commands should prepare to take full responsibility of any consiquence of their choice.

There are others biblical reasons why we, Christian, should not go there or participate in or involve with those sinful path activities. However, it flankly is not a solid law that we, Christian, should not go there for another purpose of visit.

In my personal opinion, I would rather go other places that I can recognize God's creations and enjoy being solitary with natures than go to a city where is full of people, gambling, lights-sounds, traffic, etc. National Parks is my favorit choices!

Very Well said P'Jade. If we have a choice, there are million places that we can go to enjoy God's creation. But because man has sined and their heart is not of God, that's why Las Vagas or similar city was created. That is to fulfit the sinful nature of those who has not saved yet.

As a christian, I have been to Las Vegas for three or four time. Personally, I don't like to stay there. All hotels are full of smoker. I can not breath well when passing the gamble hall way. But I appreciate the arhitect of the new century. They are well made! Talk about how advance our world are. They re-create Paris, New York, Vanice, etc. there. I would consider Las Vegas as the Wonderous of the World that Man Build! Wink

Las Vegas has good food and cheap hotel. Only three hours drive. Good place for vacation or take friends from Thailand there!

I have edited some input on my first reply to make more sense to understand how to live our lives follow by God's grace and commands.

there are so many points in the Bible that help us understand 'life matters'. so please urge your 'self' draw closer to God's word.. and your life will be guarded by His uncomparable commandment.

Los Angeles has been called "City of Angel". Ironicly, its crime rate is very high and full of drug and alcohol. Can't judge by the cover.
